The cast and crew for JJ Abrams new Star Trek movie setup production about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles to Bakersfield in Kern County to film scenes of James T. Kirk's (Chris Pine) hometown of Iowa.
When asked "Why Kern County?", a paramount executive confirmed that it is the closest area to LA that looks like Iowa. Not to mention that the open land allows to crew some privacy from us bloggers and fans.
One of Hollywood's biggest production companies is back Kern County shooting a movie that millions have been waiting for.
Paramount Producers are filming the next Star Trek movie just outside Bakersfield.
For millions of Star Trek fans an anxious wait is almost over and characters from the famed television series and theatrical space drama beaming into Kern County for a few scenes.
The movie isn't finished but the trailer is already is on the internet.
Details of the movie are secret, but here is what we do know.
Director J.J. Abrams who directed Mission Impossible Three is in Kern County directing "Star Trek: The Prequel."
The Star Trek movie will feature Winona Ryder and Chris Pine as a young James T. Kirk.
Producers say this Star Trek will feature a young, new crew.
Jeffery Chernoz, a Paramount producer, said that Paramount found it logical to pick Kern County as a shoot location because it is close to Hollywood and looks like Kirk's home state of Iowa.
Chernoz said, "We wanted something that looked like Iowa, and we also wanted to stay close to Los Angeles. So, we came out here and scouted and realized that we can kind of make Iowa out of Bakersfield."
Rick Davis from the Kern County Board of Trustees said, "We often market ourselves as Hollywood's back lot to the north. We've also been very proud of the fact that if you were going to shoot a movie in Maine and end up in Los Angeles, every scene you would need, we have here in Kern County."
Davis said the Star Trek movie will bring in $2 million in revenue for Kern County.
He said Paramount casted for extras here in Kern County, and producers confirmed, actors from Kern County will be making appearances in the newest Star Trek movie.
