When wise-cracking MARLEY is diagnosed with colon cancer, she comes to realize that she's never truly opened her heart to anyone, and with the help of her tight-knit friends and her doctor, JEFFREY, she sets about changing that...

[SARAH WALKER] 29 years old, Marley's ADD-addled best friend since grade school, she works in a creative capacity at the same advertising agency as Marley. Sarah and Marley are very close; they share the same ribald sense of humor and jokingly pretend to compete over who's thinnest. Sarah's a talented artist and painter who uses humor to keep her and Marley's spirits up after Marley is diagnosed with cancer. Despite her upbeat demeanor and ridiculous, playful pranks -- such as dressing up as conjoined twins with Marley while at the bank -- Sarah is deeply upset by the prospect of losing her best friend...LEAD (2)
[BEVERLY] Marley's mother, 56 years old, a divorced, endearing worrywart, extremely emotional, loud and loving and a bit of a drama queen, with a tendency not to listen to Marley, she moves to Marley's city and sublets a nearby apartment when she learns that her daughter is dying. Beverly feels helpless in the face of Marley's illness, and has trouble accepting the news. She doesn't understand why Marley doesn't want her to move in. While looking at a baby book in the hospital gift shop, Beverly's grief gets the best of her and she breaks down...LEAD (29)
[PETER COOPER] A unique looking, hip, slightly sarcastic gay man in his 30s who is comfortable in his own skin, he's one of Marley's good friends who lives in the same apartment building as her. He's protective of Marley and thinks she should make better dating choices. [ROB RANDOLPH] In his 40s, blunt, with a devilish side, he is Marley's boss at the advertising agency who strings her along as a joke before admitting she's earned a promotion. [RENEE] Early 30s, pregnant, accomplished, a bit judgmental, and one of Marley's good friends, she's mother to 2-year-old Cammie and appreciates Marley's willingness to babysit when Renee needs alone time with her husband, Jonathan. Renee lives in a swanky house in one of Chicago's best neighborhoods, and she's anxious for Marley to also settle down. Having suffered previous miscarriages, Renee is no stranger to heartache, and she distances herself from Marley after Marley reveals that she's got cancer. [DR. SANDERS] 65 years old, intimidating and humorless, he's an oncologist with a medical degree from Harvard who specializes in late stage cancers. Dr. Sanders serves on the hospital's board of directors and is known for his impressive fundraising abilities. He has 40 years of experience and he's revered by Jeffrey, but he also has a petty, arrogant side, and he is infuriated when Jeffrey dares to question him in front of Marley. Their relationship isn't serious and he's completely taken aback when she reveals that she's dying of cancer.
