In a long-anticipated move, Columbia Pictures is pushing forward with a third installment in the "Men in Black" franchise.
Studio has tapped "Tropic Thunder" scribe Etan Cohen to pen "Men in Black 3." There are no deals in place for the franchise's stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, though it's unlikely that Col would greenlight the project without the duo's involvement.
Col made a similar move in reviving another lucrative franchise when it began work last year on a new "Ghostbusters." At the time, the studio tapped a hot pair of scribes in Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to bring a modern twist to the supernatural comedy. With the exception of mega-property "Spider-Man," Columbia has few franchises in its vault to draw upon. The Bond franchise has reverted back to MGM.
"Ghostbusters" was Columbia's highest-grossing film ever until it was beaten by "Men in Black" and then eventually "Spider-Man."
Studio remained tight-lipped about the direction of the third "MIB" installment.
Cohen has a number of high-profile projects in development around town, including a Sherlock Holmes project with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell at Col.

Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play the Norse god Odin in “Thor,” Marvel Studios' adaptation being directed by Kenneth Branagh.
The movie’s story sees the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Odin is Thor’s father and ruler of Asgard.
Chris Hemsworth is Thor and the cast includes Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman among others.
Thor marks Hopkins’ first gig since signing with UTA a month ago. He will next be seen on screen in “The Wolfman.” He will also appear in Woody Allen’s “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.”
Hopkins is additionally repped by attorney Mitch Smelkinson.

Clancy Brown Might be Playing Lobo

Looking at the more recent successful films, it's becoming clear that star power is no longer a guaranteed box office draw for audiences. Unknown actors and actresses are garnering as much attention as their A-List counterparts. It looks like the creative team behind the upcoming Guy Ritchie adaptation of DC Comics' Lobo is paying attention to this trend as IGN says a source close to production told them that actor Clancy Brown might be the man to step into Lobo's shoes. Apparently with the amount of special effects needed to create the character, there isn't too much concern in bringing in a high profile name to lead this project.
"Ultimately regardless of whether you do it all CG or its a guy in a suit, with CG, you'll still end up doing a lot of CG animation. So do you need a celebrity? Do you need a name or do you just get someone who is good and who's gonna nail it?"

Here are some character profiles for the upcoming Conan remake, from Moviehole
[ CONAN ] He's in his 20s to early 30s, Caucasian, powerfully built, broad-shouldered, sun browned skin lined with scars. Piercing blue eyes and square-cut black mane, tall. He is a savage killer that has matured into the refinement his father tried to teach him when he was young. Conan is very smart, almost inhumanly strong, and very cunning. His entire life, from the moment of his birth, has been shaped by violence. Being the last of his tribe and having to watch his father die a cruel death, he is determined avenge his peoples slaughter by killing all those who led the attack on the Cimmerians, including the all-powerful Khalar Singh. He is prepared to die in order to accomplish his goal. What Conan did not expect, was to find a reason to live... LEAD
[ TAMARA ] She is 18 to 24 years old, Caucasian or Middle Eastern, open to all ethnicities; beautiful, studious, correct, a novitiate of a Greek influenced monastery. A master of martial arts, she has been trained to be the Queen's servant, bodyguard and best friend. She and many other female bodyguards to the queen have been in hiding most of their lives because of the curse of Acheron, which would take the queen's life to bring almost immortal power to its king. When Khalar Singh, a powerful warlord with ambitions to become the king of Acheron, storms the monastery and captures all of the novitiates, she is separated from Ilira, the one she must protect. With all of her strength and will, Tamara is determined to find and rescue her. She finds herself in league with Conan because of a mutual need to find Khalar Singh. She is not in the least intimidated by Conan's size or grim demeanor and their alliance eventually blossoms into something that surprises them both... LEAD
[ KHALAR SINGH ] He's in his 40s to 50s, Asian or Middle Eastern, Central Asian, Mongol, Turkish, or Persian, open to all ethnicities; commanding in size and manner, a warlord and formidable warrior, brilliant, cruel, weathered and tanned by the many campaigns he has waged and won. He is driven in his quest to find the Queen of Acheron and has been building an empire to do so. His goal is to find the Queen whose blood will bring life to the demonic minions of Acheron while making himself king of this hellish power. With this power, Khalar will protect his legacy against the onslaught of master sorcerer, Thoth-Amon so that his weak son, Fariq may rule after his death. While riding into a Cimmerian village to recruit his old comrade, Corin, his large collection of mercenaries slaughters them to the last soul when Corin refuses to join them. The village's only survivor was young Conan. When Khalar's search has finally narrowed to the likely discovery of the queen at a monastery of female monks, he also learns Conan is older and hungry for revenge... LEAD

Superman - J.J. Abrams would like to Return to the Franchise

Superman: The Man of Steel
The last time J.J. Abrams had the Man of Steel on his mind, things didn't exactly work out as planned, but given his resilient career in television and film since 2002, the creator is in a better position than ever to make a hypothetical return to the property. However, despite the support of high-profile fans such as filmmaker Kevin Smith and many in the fan community, at this point, nothing is officially moving forward with Abrams' version of Superman.
"No one has talked to me about it," Abrams told MTV News. "Obviously I’m sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do."
"Writing that script was a long process," he explained. "It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don’t know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."
Though the "Lost" co-creator and "Star Trek" director's first crack at scripting the Last Son of Krypton received mixed reviews from fans, it still has its supporters in Hollywood. Brendan Fraser, who actually suited up for a screen test for what would have been a Brett Ratner-directed film, has only praised what would have been. Abrams himself explained that while that particular draft didn't see the light of day, there's still a version of the script he'd enjoy he could envision being produced.
"That version of the movie—the one that was reviewed and vilified—was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there’s a version of that movie that could be really fun to see," said Abrams. "You never really know. Everything happens for a reason."

The Expendables - Details on "Secret Scene"

Sylvester Stallone. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. On screen. Together.
The trio of iconic Hollywood action heroes united this weekend to film a scene together for "The Expendables," Stallone's long-awaited ensemble action epic. The writer-director-actor was able to wrangle both Willis and Schwarzenegger for smaller roles in the movie, and while we first broke word of this reunion a few months back, the actual filming has commenced — and based on the admittedly scarce details, this not-so-secret scene sounds pretty wonderful.
Publicist Maria Lascala described the shooting over at Ethelmae's Blog, which already hosts a bevy of insightful commentary on the behind-the-scenes process of "The Expendables." Lascala wrote that when Schwarzenegger, Willis and Stallone first arrived on set, all three of them "greeted each other with excitement and anticipation."
"I thought it was electric in Brazil when all of The Expendables stepped on set — but today was atomic!!!" Lascala wrote on the blog. "[The] whole crew was mesmerized as we watched the three of them play off of each other in a pivotal scene that sets up the whole movie."
Lascala was secretive on the details, though she did identify Willis' and Schwarzenegger's characters as Church and Trench, respectively. Additionally, the scene was shot inside of a church "without extras and minimal set [decorations]," and is apparently filled with "tension and humor."
From the sound of it, there wasn't as much butt-kicking, skull-crushing and flesh-chewing as some of us might have liked — or, perhaps, Lascala is merely throwing us off the scent — but the fact that Schwarzenegger, Willis and Stallone have actually filmed a scene together is enough to get me giddy about "The Expendables," as if I wasn't excited enough already.

Mad Max 4: Fury Road - Set to Begin Production
The fourth installment in George Miller's "Mad Max" franchise, "Fury Road," is set to go into production in Sydney and outback New South Wales next year, according to local reports Saturday.
Miller, who also will produce the film through his production shingle Kennedy Miller, is quoted as saying that " 'Fury Road' will put NSW back on the map as a filmmaking destination.
"Hollywood has cut its production in half. Big movies like 'Fury Road' and 'Happy' Feet are rare and competitively sought after in all the filmmaking regions of the world," Miller told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.
"The production agreements have been a long time in the making and (NSW) Premier Rees and his team have worked like Trojans to ensure this substantial investment comes into this country. Not only does it help fuel the local economy but it means many talented people get a chance to practice their craft and lift their skills."
News that "Fury Road" has been given the greenlight comes just 10 days after Warner Bros. announced was pulling production of "Green Lantern" out of Australia.
No studio backing for "Fury Road" was announced for the film which reportedly has a $100 million budget.
"The 'Mad Max' films are iconic," Rees said. "In the hands of director George Miller, we will see one of the largest and most ambitious live-action films ever made in Australia. This is a clear vote of confidence in Australian expertise. This proves that Sydney is an international contender for major film production."
