Ghostbusters 3 - Arriving in 2011

In an interview with Harold Ramis, he confirmed Ghostbusters 3, and says it will be released in 2011.
Here comes the Ghostbusters question: What’s up with part three?
Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future ... GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.

For those of you that have seen the new Iron Man 2 Trailer, you know that it had many awesome moments such as Whiplash slashing Tony Stark's race car in half, War Machine side by side in battle with Iron Man and many other fun moments.
However, it seems like the trailer was hiding one little key spoiler that reveals potential plot details and plans for Black Widow who is played by Scarlett Johansson.
Apparently the Black Widow has a S.H.E.I.L.D. logo on her out fit that was not shown in any of the promotional pictures.
So what does this mean? Well of course the obvious it seems at some point Widow will become an agent of S.H.E.I.L.D., but more importantly this could set up Johansson to return as Black Widow in The Avengers!
Thanks to some eagle eyed fans for spotting the logo and our friends at SlashFilm for this screencap:

Avatar - Initial Sequel Plot Details
In reference to the other moons around Polyphemus, Cameron said:
We have some story ideas about how to branch out into other moons of Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A (ACA) solar system.
This means we’ll be seeing further human exploration into that solar system, or perhaps even the newly Na’vi born Jake heading back into space with Neytiri in tow. I also would love to get a good luck at the destroyed Earth they keep referring to in the film.
Cameron also recently told ComingSoon how much Avatar was thought of as a possible franchise from the beginning:
Actually, when I pitched this to 20th Century Fox four-and-a-half years ago, I said, ‘You know, we’re going to spend a lot of money and time and energy creating not only a process but the assets, the CG assets, we call them - all the models of every rock and tree and plant and creature and the muscle rigs for all the creatures and the facial rigging for the main characters and all that’… huge, millions and millions of dollars. So it really makes sense to think of it as the potential start of a franchise, if you will, or a saga that plays out over several acts, each movie being an act of that saga.
He goes on to say that he’s mapped out what will happen in the sequels, although he hasn’t written any scripts yet.
In regards to actually producing the sequels, Cameron told MTV that he can definitely get them out faster than the first film:
Part of what we set out to do is create a world and create these characters. From the time we capture and finish the capture, it’s literally nine to 10 months to get the CG characters working, to get their facial musculature working. … So now we have Jake, we have Neytiri. Sam can step right back into it, the characters will fit them like a glove, and we’ll just go on. So a lot of the start-up torque that had to be done for one movie really makes more sense if you play it out across several films.
This is all assuming Cameron doesn’t want to make some grand changes to the underlying technology before the next films. Even considering something like that though, they’ll still be much better off production-wise the next time around.
We also recently ran some comments from producer Jon Landau on the sequel, in which he said, “After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.”

Avatar finished in first place with a total of $75M for the weekend, which was slightly ahead of Sherlock Holmes that ended with approximately $65M.
Along with Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel finishing in third, the Christmas weekend set a record for the biggest weekend box office total ever finishing with $273M up 36% from 2008.
Avatar and Holmes battled for the top spot with Holmes winning the Christmas day total but Avatar's 3D ticket sales and staying power allowed it to take the top spot and now has grossed over $615M worldwide in only in two weeks.

Holmes Opens with $25M on Christmas Day and Avatar Soars Past $150M
"Sherlock Holmes" unwrapped the biggest present at the boxoffice Christmas Day, kicking off what's shaping up as a hectic and crowded weekend at the muliplex.
Attracting an estimated $24.9 million for its opening day, Warners Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, led the pack.
The PG-13 rated movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, bowed in 3,626 locations. Entering its eighth day of release Fox's "Avatar" was close behind. The 3D space tale pulled in another $23.6 million as it easily crossed the $150 million mark.
"Avatar," of course, benefitted from premium ticket prices, although it also had to contend with playing on fewer screens -- 3,456 locales -- and has a running time that is more than one half longer that "Sherlock's."
Still, by weekend's end, the two films could be battling it out for the top spot.
Meanwhile, Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which opened on Wednesday when it briefly commanded the top boxoffice slot for that day, settled securely into the third spot on Friday. PG-rated family fare, directed by Betty Thomas, "Alvin" took in $14.3 million for the day in 3,700 locations.
In the process, it appeared to lure the kiddie crowd away from Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," which, as it began its third weekend of wide release, dropped to eighth place for the day as it took in $2 million.
Aiming to lure in older women, Universal's "It's Complicated," bowed in fourth place. Nancy Meyers' R-rated comedy, starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, grossed $7.2 million in 2,886 locations. That was in line with a recent Streep vehicle like August's "Julie & Julia," which opened to a first-day gross of $6.5 million and bettered the first-day opening figure of Meyer's 2003 "Something's Gotta Give," which opened to $5.3 million.
After three weekends in limited distribution, Paramount sent Jason Reitman's award hopeful "Up in the Air" into wide release on Wednesday, and Christmas Day it ranked fifth, collecting $3.7 million for the day.
Warner's uplifting drama, "The Blind Side," beginning its sixth weekend, was nipping at "Up's" heels, though. The Sandra Bullock-starrer, which is also demonstrating some awards potential, was in sixth place, picking up $3.4 million as it crossed the $175 million mark domestically.
The Weinstein Co.'s musical "Nine," which opened in New York and Los Angeles last weekend, also broadened out on Christmas Day, moving into 1,412 theaters. But Rob Marshall's PG-13-rated tuner didn't have quite as many moviegoers whistling its tunes. It found itself in seventh place, as it collected $2.1 million.
Rounding out the top 10, Sony's comedy "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" ranked ninth as it began its second weekend with a daily total of 1.6 million.
In the tenth spot, Warner's South African-set "Invictus," directed by Clint Eastwood, pulled in $1.3 million as it entered is third weekend, bringing its cumulative domestic gross to just over $20 million.

The Lost Symbol
Earlier this year we learned that Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown’s third book, The Lost Symbol is being turned into a movie at Columbia Pictures. What we didn’t know at the time was whether Hanks would be involved and, in light of the general disinterest in the second Code movie Angels & Demons, you might think they’d have second thoughts about doing it at all. Not so, according to our sources.
Word is that The Lost Symbol is close to starting pre-production and the studio still plans to fast track it for a 2012 release date. Most importantly, we’ve heard that Tom Hanks is “all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon.” Far less certain however is the involvement of Ron Howard as director, though more often than not money talks and Columbia Pictures has plenty to spend.

Top 7 Directors of the Decade
Posted by
The ODI
at
Monday, December 21, 2009
Labels:
Industry News
Yup it is that time of year again, Year in Reviews left and right, but with the decade ending we are getting the typical Best of the Decade lists. Typically we will see lists with the best movies, but I just read this cool list with the Best Directors of the Decade.
I am not sure if I agree with the whole list and I would definitely make Clint Eastwood higher than 6, but can't complain about Christopher Nolan at #1.
Enjoy!
7. Wes Anderson
Love him or hate him, Wes Anderson knows how to make great movies. Though he’s remembered more for his quirky screenplays than his ability behind the camera, Anderson seems to have a hand in every single detail of his movies, and that’s a telltale sign of someone in love with their craft. He also boasts one of the best stables of actors in town (Bill Murray, Angelica Huston, the Wilson brothers, etc.), and more recently, nabbed such in-demand actors as George Clooney and Meryl Streep to voice a couple of talking foxes in a stop-motion animated film that’s actually better than Pixar’s latest. Add to that one of the best comedies of the decade in “The Royal Tenenbaums,” the cult favorite “The Life Aquatic,” and the criminally underrated “The Darjeeling Limited,” and his place on this list suddenly doesn’t seem so unwarranted.
6. Clint Eastwood
Sometimes working too much can have a counteracting effect, because while Clint Eastwood was able to bang out nine films over the course of the last decade, it’s his hit-and-miss track record that ultimately prevents him from finishing higher on the list. For every “Letters from Iwo Jima,” there’s a “Flags of Our Fathers,” and while films like “Million Dollar Baby,” “Mystic River” and “Gran Torino” are easily some of the best movies of their respective years, “Space Cowboys” and “Changeling” are some of the worst. His latest film, “Invictus,” falls somewhere in between, and that’s only because he makes the subject material better than it is. Still, if there’s anything we can learn from a guy like Eastwood, it’s that sometimes less is more.
5. Peter Jackson
Apart from making three of the biggest movies of the decade, Peter Jackson also tackled a remake of one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time and a best-selling novel where the main character spends a majority of the story in heaven. If “The Fellowship of the Ring” hadn’t become a worldwide sensation, though, Jackson’s career could have gone down a very different path. After having been entrusted by New Line Cinema to shoot all three “Lord of the Rings” films back-to-back, Jackson returned the favor by delivering a worldwide sensation that kept the studio in business for a few more years (before merging with Warner Bros.), while making a name for himself as a visual maestro. That led to another pet project, “King Kong,” and eventually to a big screen adaptation of “The Lovely Bones.” Neither one is quite as good as the “LOTR” trilogy, but then again, neither are most movies.
4. Joel and Ethan Coen
The Brothers Coen got off to a great start in 2000 with the musical comedy “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” only to follow it up with duds like “Intolerable Cruelty” and “The Ladykillers.” Of course, I’ve resisted from even mentioning “The Man Who Wasn’t There” because, although not exactly a failure, it had absolutely no impact on me. They eventually turned things around with the 2007 Oscar winner, “No Country for Old Man,” which was not only one of the best films of their career, but of the decade as well. “Burn After Reading” saw them revisit their quirkier side, while “A Serious Man,” although much different from their other films in that it doesn’t feature a single big-name actor, is the kind of movie that you need to watch more than once to fully appreciate. That could be considered a negative in this day and age, but it’s exactly that disregard for mainstream audiences that makes their work so memorable.
3. Jason Reitman
As the child of a big-time movie director, I’m not sure if it’s easier to succeed in Hollywood or fail, but Jason Reitman has quickly outshined his father’s legacy with three of the best films of the decade. Granted, it’s not a lot to judge by compared to some of the other directors on this list, but Reitman has proven himself more than adept at making movies – especially when he’s the one writing them. His 2005 debut, “Thank You for Smoking,” was a great adaptation of an already funny Christopher Buckley novel, while 2007’s “Juno” continued a trend of getting great performances from every one of his actors. Though he’s yet to be rewarded for his work behind the camera, “Up in the Air” shows an incredible maturity to his filmmaking that might finally net him a golden statue. Even if it doesn’t, though, that doesn’t change the fact that he makes the kind of movies that just about everyone can enjoy.
2. Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino is the kind of director that other filmmakers must secretly hate, because his movies are unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. What’s so great about a Tarantino flick is that he takes a genre that most people might not usually be interested in and revamps them for a mainstream crowd. He also writes some of the most quotable dialogue in the business and has a knack for using actors whose careers have long been dead. David Carradine delivered his greatest performance as the titular character in the two-part revenge film, “Kill Bill,” while Kurt Russell was all sorts of vintage cool in the “Death Proof” portion of “Grindhouse.” Of course, Tarantino’s greatest achievement of this year came with the release of his World War II epic “Inglourious Basterds,” a decidedly more mature feature from the director that proved even Tarantino could grow up when the time came.
1. Christopher Nolan
When your weakest film is the 2002 thriller “Insomnia,” you know you’ve had a great career, and Christopher Nolan’s only gets better with each passing year. Before directing big stars like Al Pacino and Robin Williams, however, Nolan made a name for himself with the mind-bending reverse narrative, “Memento.” Both movies were pretty big achievements for a young filmmaker, but they pale in comparison to what he accomplished with the Batman films. After successfully rebooting the franchise with 2005’s “Batman Begins,” Nolan struck gold again with the 2008 follow-up, “The Dark Knight,” when his highly-debated decision to cast Heath Ledger as the Joker paid off in spades. It’s actually quite surprising that Nolan has yet to receive an Oscar nomination for his work – especially with underrated gems like “The Prestige” to his name – because he’s easily one of the best directors working today.

Bond 23 Will Have a Shocking Story

Bond 23
The last time we heard anything about Bond 23 was back in June, when EON Productions announced that Peter Morgan (The Last King of Scotland, The Queen, Frost/Nixon) would be writing the screenplay along with Bond franchise regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. Bond website MI6.co.uk (via SlashFilm) has an update from Morgan saying that the screenwriter moved to Vienna, Austria earlier this year to work on the screenplay. All that he would tell them about it is that "it's a shocking story." He also added that "Bond creates a hysteria around it" that he hasn't seen before in which everyone is always asking about Bond 23.
As a diehard James Bond fan, I've been trying to think about some possibilities for a "shocking story." Though I have a good feeling that they might be killing off M. Judi Dench has said she's returning, but let's not forget that her version of M in the Daniel Craig movies, in theory, exists before the version of M that Bernard Lee played in the old Sean Connery and Roger Moore Bond movies. We need to get a new M anyway and right now (in the Bond universe where Vesper Lynd was killed) she's the closest person to Bond and one of the few he can trust. So if she were to get killed, that would definitely shake things up for James Bond.
Of course, there's no director attached to this yet either, so we don't know too much about it. According to reports back in 2007, Daniel Craig will still be playing James Bond for at least three more movies. MI6 also states that pre-production on Bond 23 has been put on hold because MGM is still looking for money or a new owner. I'm one of those people who is always looking forward to the next James Bond and it looks like this next one may hit in 2011 as planned.

Box Office - Avatar Easily Wins Weekend with $73 Million
Avatar had very little competition on it's way to the second biggest December opening behind I Am Legend ($77M) but the $73M is the biggest opening for a non-sequel or movie that is not a remake or based on an adaptation.
The 3D format accounted for approximately $52M of the total gross and was the largest first weekend for the 3D format.
It will be interesting to see how Avatar performs over the next week or two since much of the east coast was dealing with a huge winter storm and Sherlock Holmes opens providing it with some real competition.

Avatar Brings in $26.7M in it's First Day of Release

James Cameron's "Avatar" launched with an estimated $26.7 million opening day Friday, including $3.5 million from its midnight screenings. Fox's mammoth, PG-13 3D movie is playing in 3,452 locations in North America, many of them charging premium ticket prices.
Its Friday number fell short of the $30.1 million that Will Smith's "I Am Legend" pulled in on its opening day on Dec. 14, 2007, which enabled that movie to set the record for a December opening weekend of $77.2 million. The final weekend number for "Avatar," though it should approach "Legend" territory, is difficult to predict given that much of the East Coast is contending with a blizzard.
"Avatar's" arrival dwarfed that of the weekend's other new wide release, Sony's "Green Acres"-flavored rom-com, "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. The PG-13 movie, directed by Marc Lawrence, took in $2.4 million as it opened in 2,718 locations for a fourth-place showing for the day.

Bryan Singer Discusses More About X-Men: First Class

Twentieth Century Fox has set Bryan Singer to direct "X-Men: First Class," returning him to the franchise that began with the first two installments of the mutant series. Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are producers.
Singer had been flirting with the project since last summer (Daily Variety, Aug. 13). Deal was made after the studio sparked to a detailed treatment he wrote for the film. Jamie Moss was hired to write the script, and the studio will move aggressively.
Singer told Daily Variety that he thought long and hard about returning to the franchise he launched until he found a storyline that would stand on its own.
"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn," Singer said. "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain."
In the film, Xavier and Magneto will be twentysomething, and the film sounds similar in construct to the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek."
"Whether it's 'Batman,' 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Star Trek,' if the characters are good, you want to see them on their journey even if you know their destiny," Singer said. "I put myself in the fan's position, and I think this story is something I would want to see, and so will they."
Fox has launched the "Origins" project by hiring Josh Schwartz to write the script. Singer went back to the drawing board but feels so in synch with the concept and the writer that he feels the project can come together quickly. The studio is separately developing an origin film on Magneto, another about Deadpool and a sequel to last summer's hit "Wolverine," which Singer said he liked.
Singer hasn't fixed on his next movie, but he is in a holding deal with New Line for "Jack the Giant Killer," which is still working out its conceptual visual development of the giants.
Singer is also attached to direct "Battlestar Galactica" and, after a rights issue was cleared up, he's beginning to develop a remake of "Excalibur."

With The Hangover hitting DVD and Blu-Ray this week everybody is talking about the impending sequel to the biggest comedy of all time. Director Todd Phillips has been stressing that the sequel, which is in the scripting stage right now, will not be taking place in Las Vegas. So where will the boys be going to get into trouble?
How about Thailand?
At least that's the plan right now. What will be the story and why will the four friends be in Thailand? Beats me, but sources close to the movie tell me that Thailand is the destination. It's a pretty good destination for a movie about waking up with regret, and you have to wonder how edgy they're going to get in this chapter. I imagine Thai ladyboys are a certainty, but how about the more unseemly side of Thai sex tourism? Will Zack Galifiniakis end up with a child bride instead of a baby?
Another source has told me that Thailand was going to be the setting of the scrapped Old School Dos, so it could be that Phillips is recycling a bunch of jokes that were intended for Will Ferrel and Vince Vaughn.
Since the script isn't finalized things could still change, but my source is someone who would know. Get ready for lots of Phuket jokes.

If you’re a fan of Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) and the Predator franchise, I’m about to tell you some awesome news. That’s because I’m in Austin right now, as I got to spend all day on the set of director Nimród Antal’s Predators movie - along with a number of other online journalists. While I can’t tell you anything about what I saw or thought of the movie until my embargo lifts, I’m allowed to report Laurence Fishburne has just joined the cast and he’s playing a character named Noland.
