Alice in Wonderland Breaks Avatar's Opening Weekend 3D Sales

Labels: , ,

Now I know this title is a little misleading, but $80 Million of Alice in Wonderland's $116M opening weekend was because of the 3D Showings. Avatar's opening weekend for 3D sales was $55M. Additionally Alice set a new IMAX opening weekend record with $12M.

Alice will have a good run as many fans will still watch for 3D but it has a long way to go to challenge Avatar and I am sure it will not get close. Also, Alice and Tim Burton should be thanking Jim Cameron and Avatar for paving the road for the the 3D hype.

I have seen both in 3D IMAX and Avatar's 3D was far superior. It will be interesting to see how fans react to other upcoming 3D releases including Clash of the Titans in a few weeks.

The $116M opening was Tim Burton's best opening and Johnny Depp's second best opening weekend.

The only other movie new movie was Brooklyn's Finest which opened to a measly $13M. Since it cost only $25 it will be able to recoup the budget.

Here is a breakdown of the Top 12 thanks to BoxOfficeMojo.com
