Lock Out - Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace Cast as Leads

Labels: , ,

The Wrap reports that EuropaCorp has cast Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace, Peter Stormare and Tom Hollander in an upcoming sci-fi action movie called Lock Out. The film takes place in a prison orbiting 50 miles above Earth, housing 500 of the most dangerous prisoners who are kept asleep by sophisticated methods until they suddenly awaken, causing all hell to break loose. It sounds like one of those sci-fi "supermax" prison movies, like they tried with DC Comics, but without any supervillains.

The budget for Lock Out is expected to be in the $30 million range, and production is scheduled to begin at the end of next month in Belgrade. That definitely means all these actors are locked in (pun not intended) and will be headlining this sci-fi flick. Stephen St. Leger (Prey Alone) and cinematographer James Mather will direct from a script they co-wrote with Luc Besson. I don't know about everyone else, but I love these smaller-budget sci-fi concepts that Besson gets behind. He is still one of my favorite filmmakers and even though he's not directing, his influence will definitely be felt. We'll keep an eye out for this, so stay tuned!

Update: Deadline has a bit more information about the characters and the plot of this movie beyond what was mentioned originally. Although Maggie Grace already starred as the kidnapped-girl in Taken, they say Lock Out "transports a Taken premise to outer space." Pearce plays a man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the US. He's offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates. So does that help make this sound any better or worse?
