Martin Scorsese: Artist, Visionary, Legend by Carly

Labels:

What makes someone legendary? Is it based on financial success? Professional ingenuity? Luck? Whatever "legend" is, director Martin Scorsese seems to have captured it. With a directorial career spanning over 40 years, and with the massive critical and commercial success of each of his films, Martin Scorsese has redefined American filmmaking. With the release date for his latest work Shutter Island quickly approaching, let's take a look back at some of the films which helped Scorsese to achieve the celebrated status he enjoys today.

My favorite film from Scorsese's work in the 1970s is Taxi Driver (1976): a study of one man's freefall into madness against a grim urban backdrop. Robert De Niro stars as Travis Bickle: a disillusioned young man whose brooding inner monologue provides the ominous sonic backdrop for the film. As Bickle falls deeper into derangement, his chaotic interior invades the exterior space, and his frightening world envelops the viewers. Scorsese's work stands out because the film captures a larger disillusionment present in American society during the 1970s, and channels that discontent into Bickle. Scorsese's use of saturated color, ominous music, and complex cinematography enhance the dark narrative. This work stands as one of the director's first major cinematic successes, and establishes the unique style and narrative approach which will define Scorsese's work in the following years.

Perhaps Scorsese's greatest work, Raging Bull (1980), marked the second major collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro. The film followed the tragic trajectory of middleweight boxing champion Jake La Motta, and continued Scorsese's thematic explorations of masculinity, societal disillusionment, and personal redemption. Scorsese took his cinematic prowess to the next level, as he filmed in black and white, and experimented with various cinematographic techniques (slow motion, tracking, and distorted shots). This film catapulted Scorsese into international recognition, and set the tone for films to come.

One of Scorsese's most memorable works from the 1990s is Goodfellas (1990), a gangster film which delved into the underground criminal world of New York, and into the psyches of its leaders. The film continued the Scorsese style established by his earlier films, but continued to experiment with cinematographic techniques. The film features a famous tracking shot as the protagonist escorts his future wife through his favorite restaurant, as well as a complex shot which moved the camera closer to the characters while concurrently zooming out. These innovative technical approaches added depth to Scorsese's character studies, and cemented the director into a cinematic master.

While there are a number of fantastic Scorsese films I have not discussed (The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence, The Aviator, The Departed, etc.), the ones mentioned stand as pillars in the foundation of Scorsese's career. As the release date for Shutter Island approaches, we can only imagine what this visionary director has in store. In the age of digital cinema and CGI, Martin Scorsese has a new arsenal of cinematic tools as his disposal. I envision the director taking his talent to the next level, and setting the bar even higher for himself and other filmmakers. I'm ready for more Scorsese magic!

Shutter Island opens on February 19, 2010.

Miramax Closes it's Doors After 31 Years

Labels:

After operating for over 31 years, Miramax has finally shut down, and its New York and Los Angeles offices will both be closed. Another casualty of this economy? Or just another casualty of the always-changing world of motion pictures? Ever since Mike Judge's Extract bombed last year, Miramax has been on the verge of closing down. And now with Rich Ross running Disney, that studio, which has owned Miramax for 17 years, has finally put the last nail in its coffin. For those that don't know, the distributor was originally founded in 1979 by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who broke off due to infighting in 2005 to start their own company.

In its early days, Miramax distributed films like The Piano, Pulp Fiction, Sex, Lies & Videotape, The English Patient, Shakespeare In Love, and The Talented Mr Ripley, and was also the home of Kevin Smith's early films, starting with Clerks in 1994. Disney acquired the distributor in 1993 and it was doing well until the 2000s. New Miramax films that are still to be released, including Last Night, The Debt, and The Tempest, will be "shelved, to gather dust, or win a tepid release," according to The Wrap. The studio tried to make a comeback in recent years with films like The Queen and No Country for Old Men, but to no success.

The Avengers - Kevin Feige Confirms Hulk Appearance

Labels: ,

"Its fun now and we are introducing some new characters in these films. But its not about cramming in lots of new people ..that's sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel, adding too many characters"

"My only concern is that when we launch a franchise.. whichever characters franchise that may be, it should stand on its own two feet. With Iron Man being the first one out of the gate, thank goodness that's what happened. Everyone loved it. Its our job to do the same with Thor and Captain America two years from now, so by the time The Avengers comes in 2012 its not just a team super hero movie with a bunch of characters with powers, its three people, four including Hulk, five including Nick Fury-who you have seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time."

Avatar Wins Sixth Weekend in Row and is #1 Worldwide All-Time

Labels: , ,

So another weekend and another win for Avatar at the box office. Nothing too surprising except the pace that the movie continues to move at.

Adding another approximately $35M this weekend Avatar has now grossed over $550M domestically but more importantly (some point Monday) became the #1 movie All-Time in Worldwide Box Office surpassing Titanic in only 6 weeks!

Avatar's worldwide gross is at $1.86 Billion and will easily surpass the $2B mark soon.

The last big number for Avatar to take down is Titanic's domestic number of $601M and could that happen this week.

Here is the weekend box office chart by Box Office Mojo:

Alice in Wonderland - Box Office Analysis

Labels: , , , ,

Release Date: March 5 (in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D)
Studio: Buena Vista
Director: Tim Burton
Writer: Linda Woolverton (based on the novels by Lewis Carroll)
Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Anne Hathaway, Stephen Fry, Christopher Lee, Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman

Synopsis: Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen's reign of terror.
View the Trailer

Analysis: Alice in Wonderland brings together frequent collaborators Tim Burton and Johnny Depp for an adaptation of the classic Lewis Carroll novel. Their last feature together, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, grossed $52 million, a modest success considering it was a brutally violent R-rated musical set in 19th-century London. More relevant is the box office for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, their last family-oriented live-action collaboration, which grossed over $206 million in 2005. Charlie had cross-generational appeal, reaching adults who had nostalgic memories of the book and the 1971 adaptation Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The same argument could be made for Alice in Wonderland, in that it's a classic story with a famous prior adaptation (Disney's 1951 version) that should resonate outside of just the younger demographic.

The trailers and posters prominently feature Depp (as The Mad Hatter), who has been a solid box office draw since Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a smash in 2003. However, Depp does not play the lead character; that distinction belongs to relative unknown Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Technically, he also was more of an outlandish supporting character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well, and that didn't seem to slow that picture down.

Scheduled three weeks after Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and three weeks before How to Train Your Dragon, Alice in Wonderland will have room to breathe competitively for the family audience, but, regardless, it's bound to attract many teens and adults unaccompanied by children, given the Burton-Depp brand and the promised visual feast. Its positioned as the first 3D and IMAX spectacle since Avatar, and the higher ticket prices associated with those formats should give Alice some extra kick.

Avatar Wins Fifth Weekend in a Row Beating Book of Eli

Avatar Wins Fifth Weekend in a Row Beating Book of Eli

Avatar finally had some competition with new wide release The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington and the Peter Jackson movie The Lovely Bones finally expanding to a wider audience.

Eli made more money on Friday than Avatar and had a nice weekend taking in $31.6M, but it slowed over the weekend as the 3D tickets and showings allowed Avatar to top the weekend again and add another $41.3M.

At this pace, Avatar will most likely surpass The Dark Knight next weekend and it is approximately $100M away from the all-time mark set by Titanic.

Whether you liked the movie or not the continued hype and word of mouth about it and the 3D showings is paving the way to box office immortality.

The Lovely Bones came in at $17.5M and probably not near what some expected. The surprise hit Alivin and his buddies continues to plug away and will cross the $200M mark later this week.

Green Lantern - Mark Strong in Talks to Play Sinestro not Haley

Labels: , , ,

Looks like they've cast another great actor in this! Up until today we thought it was Jackie Earle Haley who was going to end playing the villain Sinestro in DC Comics' Green Lantern, but apparently that was never the case. "No, that's completely wrong," director Martin Campbell told MTV in an interview today. "In fact, we're in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro." Oh hell yes! Mark Strong, England's "secret weapon," who has been playing lots of villains recently (in Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, Robin Hood). I like Jackie Earle Haley a lot, but I love Mark Strong even more, and I'm so excited to see him join this movie!

"He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro," Campbell said. "If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he's very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life." Woops! Look like that big scoop from HitFix the other day was a bunch of baloney. Campbell also gave MTV a rundown on what characters we can expect in this: "Well, Kilowog will be, Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it's a complex story."
