Thanks to http://www.cinetvbuzz.com/ for the heads up.
Hello,
Sigourney Weaver is in Paris this week-end to honor Harrison Ford during the Cesar Awards (the French Oscars). She was today in the TV show "Le Grand Journal". She was asked if she would be part of "Avatar 2" and from what she said, it was clear she already talked about it with James Cameron and she surely would be part of it.
You can watch the video here : http://www.avatar-lesfilms.com/
The interesting part for "Avatar 2" is around 3'30''

Finally, Paramount and Ben Stiller are pulling together a PG-13 Zoolander 2 with Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2 writer Justin Theroux who'll also direct. I've learned that Ben and Justin are working on the script together, and Theroux is going to Fashion Week in Paris to "immerse himself on what is current in fashion". "It's got momentum," a studio source just told me. Everyone's hoping Owen Wilson co-stars again but no deal is set. The villain likely will be Jonah Hill who's in negotiations.

Ian McShane is in talks to come aboard "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," Disney's fourth installment in the franchise.Jerry Bruckheimer returns as producer.
The gruff-voiced thesp would play Blackbeard, the infamous pirate and villain in the pic that Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow will have to face off against as he seeks out the Fountain of Youth.
McShane starred in HBO's western "Deadwood" and NBC's "Kings." He's also lent his voice for "Caroline" and "Kung Fu Panda." He can currently be seen in the pic "44 Inch Chest."
Penelope Cruz is also negotiating to set sail (Daily Variety, Feb. 10) in the adventure that Disney has anchored on May 20, 2011.
Rob Marshall will helm from a script by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, who penned the previous pics.

Shutter Island Earns $12M on Friday and Aims for More

Paramount's delay of Shutter Island's release, once widely questioned, now looks shrewdly strategic. Sources tell me this 4th film collaboration between Marty Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio is shaping up tonight as the highest-grossing debut ever, bigger than 2002's Gangs Of New York, 2004's The Aviator, and 2006's The Departed (which posted their previous biggest opening ever of $26.8M). That pic was also Scorsese's best debut, now beaten by Shutter Island which will also be DiCaprio's biggest, besting the $30M of 2002's Steven Spielberg-directed Catch Me If You Can. But Shutter Island was the target of bad buzz following Paramount's abrupt decision to push the widely touted 2009 awards contender from October 2nd out of competition entirely to 2010. (The pic was already on people's Oscar list.) At the time, Paramount chief Brad Grey said he was delaying to give the pic "every possible chance to succeed both creatively and financially". Also, Leo wasn't going to be available to promote the pic internationally. So the studio settled on the release date of February 19th because "that's when Silence Of The Lambs came out" back in 1991.

Al Pacino is slipping into the shoes vacated by Robert De Niro in the police thriller "Son of No One," being directed by Dito Montiel and produced by Holly Wiersma.
Hannibal Pictures is pacting with Nu Image/Millenium Films to co-produce and co-distribute the movie, which begins shooting in New York on March 22.
The script, written by Montiel, centers on a young cop who is assigned to a precinct in the working class neighborhood where he grew up, with an old secret surfacing and threatening to destroy his life and family.
Channing Tatum has been sought to play the young cop, although no deal is in place.
Terrence Howard, Ray Liotta and Katie Holmes are in various stages of dealmaking to join the cast.
"No One" is one of the hotter presales titles at the European Film Market. Territories signed within the last few days include the Middle East (Eagle), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Turkey (Horizon) Poland (Monolith), Romania, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia (Grandview Castle) and Latin America (Swen). Deals also were made for the U.K. and Spain, with a deal with a Canadian distributor expected imminently.

"Riddick" delivers on both counts. Though billed as a back-to-basics approach to the character popularized by Diesel, the script features the character -- the most wanted man in the galaxy -- left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with "trisons" (three-legged bisons) and "mud demons." He must then contend with two squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride rockets called jetcycles.

Vin Diesel on Board for New Riddick Sequel

Vin Diesel is going back to the future to topline and produce a third chapter in the "Chronicles of Riddick" franchise.
Universal will handle domestic distribution on the sci-fi film, which is titled "Riddick." Lionsgate is selling international rights at the Berlin Film Festival.
David Twohy -- who wrote and directed the first two films in the series, "Pitch Black" and "The Chronicles of Riddick" -- will helm from a screenplay he penned.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. But insiders say the third outing will hew closer in tone to the cult hit "Pitch Black" and will focus on the character of Riddick as opposed to the universe he inhabits, which was the case with the critically panned "Chronicles of Riddick." Still, "Chronicles of Riddick" earned $116 million worldwide and spawned a successful vidgame series.
Dates are being worked out for "Riddick" so as not to overlap with Universal's fifth installment of "Fast and Furious," which will shoot sometime this year with Diesel onboard to star and produce.
Diesel and Samantha Vincent are producing "Riddick" through their One Race Films banner. Radar Films' Ted Fields is also producing.

“Hey everyone, I’m Roy Conli, producer of Disney’s next animated film. I have some exciting news to share, and it was important to me that YOU guys – the Disney fans – hear it first. I want to tell you about Walt Disney Animation Studio’s 2010 release, Tangled. It’s a really fresh, smart take on the Rapunzel story. In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair. We’re having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, who’s seen it all, with Rapunzel, who’s been locked away in a tower for 18 years. I’m so proud of the crew working on this film – they’re doing a fantastic job creating an awesome story with great characters and a stunning world – and it’s all going to look amazing in 3D. All of us here at the studio are incredibly excited for you to see Tangled when it comes out in theaters this November.”

The Three Musketeers Reboot on the Way

The Three Musketeers
Alexandre Dumas' classic 17th-century adventure "The Three Musketeers" is set to get the "Sherlock Holmes" treatment.
Producer Lionel Wigram, the creative force behind helmer Guy Ritchie's take on Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth, has tapped screenwriter Peter Straughan ("The Men Who Stare at Goats") and Bridget O'Connor to update Dumas' swashbuckling tale to appeal to young, contemporary auds.
Wigram, a former Warners creative exec who oversaw the first three "Harry Potter" pics and who now has a first-look deal with the studio, has set the project up at Warner Bros.
"The Three Musketeers" tells the story of hot-headed D'Artagnan as he joins forces with three veteran musketeers to battle the villainous Cardinal Richelieu. Also in the mix is the mysterious figure of Milady.
Straughan's script will play up the action and sexier elements of the story much the same way that Wigram, who co-wrote and produced "Sherlock Holmes," reimagined the detective (limned by Robert Downey Jr.) as a bare-knuckle boxing, martial-arts savvy sleuth.
No director or cast has been attached to the project yet.
With work under way on prepping a "Holmes" sequel, the producer sees similar franchise potential in "The Three Musketeers." Dumas penned two sequels to his original novel.
Trilogy, which includes books "Twenty Years After" and "The Vicomte de Bragalonne," is known collectively as "The D'Artagnan Romances."
"The Three Musketeers" has been the subject of numerous previous adaptations, most notably George Sidney's 1948 version starring Lana Turner and Gene Kelly; Richard Lester's 1973 version starring Oliver Reed and Michael York; and Stephen Herek's 1993 version starring Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland.
Brit helmer Paul Anderson ("Resident Evil") is also prepping a 3D version of the tale with the backing of Germany's Constantin.

Depp is reprising his popular role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and while plot details are buried deeper than Blackbeard's treasure, it is known the tale revolves around the Fountain of Youth.
Cruz's character details are also being kept secret, though she is to be Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways.

Nolan to Mentor Superman Reboot and Prep Batman 3

Warner Bros is trying to ready its DC Comics stalwart Superman to soar again on the Big Screen, and the studio has turned to Chris Nolan to mentor development of the movie. Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a "godfather" role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus. Nolan's leadership of the project can set it in the right direction with the critics and the fans, not to mention at the box office. Besides, Nolan is considered something of a god at Warner Bros and has a strong relationship with the studio after the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Though he wasn’t obligated to do so, he gave the studio first crack at his spec script Inception, and Warner Bros was able to buy it before other studios even got a sniff. While Nolan completes that Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer for a July 16th release, he's also hatched an idea for Warner Bros' third Batman installment. Now his brother and frequent collaborator Jonathan "Jonah" Nolan, and David Goyer who co-wrote Batman Begins and penned the story for The Dark Knight, are off scripting it. (See 'FlashForward' Showrunner Exits For Features).
Legendary Pictures will partner with Warner Bros on the next installment of Superman. Legendary also co-produced/co-financed Superman Returns in 2006. Legendary was partnered with Warner Bros as a co-producer/co-financier on the recent Batman films including Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and will be involved in Nolan’s 3rd Batman film.

'Vacation' Reboot - Writers Hired

Vacation 2
Sorry if I'm about to ruin your favorite spot of the Super Bowl, but remember that Homeaway ad that reunited Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo as the Griswold family? Yeah, that wasn't just a one-off thing. The ad was intended to whet our appetite for a full-on Vacation redo, which has been in development for a while and today has finally hired screenwriters to get the machine lumbering to life again.
The lucky guys are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who have done a fair amount of script work around Hollywood but, based on Variety's report, haven't had anything actually make it to the screen so far. Daley would have made a fair Rusty Griswold back in the days he was starring on Judd Apatow's late, great Freaks & Geeks, but now that he's all grown up, apparently it's all behind-the-scenes work for him.
Then again, the new film is all about Rusty and his own family as they road trip to Wally World one last time, so if Daley wants to make an acting comeback.... Chevy Chase will also be part of the festivities, as Grandpa Clark. No word on whether D'Angelo is returning, but if she made the time for the Homeaway ad, you've got to figure a cameo here is inevitable.
The one last interesting tidbit is that the "National Lampoon" label won't be attached to this film, likely a rights thing. While the National Lampoon title has lately indicated more bad things than good, it does feel like a shame that a new Vacation movie will be a completely separate thing. As we've learned from the rotating casts of Rustys and Audreys over the years, though, nothing lasts forever, not even your own children.

The Psychology of Fear by annabreslaw

When I was about ten, I was obsessed with a series of YA novels called Fearless.
From the mind of Francine Pascal (creator of the equally-implausible high school fantasy Sweet Valley High), the series revolved around a 17-year-old girl named Gaia Moore who was born without the gene for fear. Because many teenage girls are sort of ruled by fear (fear of cliques, fear of judgment, fear of romance), the conceit is immensely appealing.
Fear dominates so much of everyone’s lives that it serves as a basis for emotions, decisions, and even entertainment, e.g. thriller and horror films. The false scares and cheap shocks of a psychological thriller, like the upcoming Gothic Scorsese-DiCaprio venture Shutter Island, stimulate our amygdala, clusters of nuclei deep in the center of our brains that play a role in the neurobiology of fear.
It’s the fight-or-flight response without the real risk of danger. Some of us seek the fear, and others shy away. Check out the trailer and see which one you are.
Shutter Island is in theaters February 19.

Captain America - The Invaders Confirmed to Appear!

The First Avenger: Captain America
As expected, there's a lot of big Captain America news hitting the web this weekend because director Joe Johnston is finally out talking to press. In addition to all the details we learned about the movie yesterday, over at CHUD they've confirmed with Johnston himself that The Invaders, a WWII superteam that Cap and Bucky are a part of, will be in the movie, too. In fact, "they'll be in the entire second half," Johnston told them. It was first rumored last year that The Invaders might make an appearance but now we know they're officially involved. So does that mean we might see up to "nine costumed characters" in this movie total?
The Invaders are a group of WWII superheroes first created in 1975. In addition to Cap and Bucky, they're made up of other various characters like the Human Torch, Toro, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the Silver Scorpion. What it looks like they're doing in Captain America is creating The Invaders, instead, out of a group of European characters, hence why Kevin Feige said last year that The Invaders would give them "an opportunity for much more international casting." Johnson also told CHUD that The Invaders will have six members, so if you add Bucky, Cap, and Red Skull, that means nine costumed characters (or just seven?).
I'm glad we're starting to this much more about The First Avenger: Captain America. I'm happy that they chose to go with the original WWII storyline to begin with but now hearing that they're going all out to make this the irreplaceable Captain America movie is awesome. I think Marvel is sparing no expense with every new movie they work on. As in, Iron Man 2 they're already going all out with, Thor we've heard that they're going all out (and its got a great cast), and now with Captain America, it sounds like it's the perfect origin story (and intro to The Avengers). Feige knows what he's doing and I'm excited to see The Invaders as well.

Thanks to Emma for the heads up
When Sigourney Weaver was traveling the world promoting Avatar, she dropped a possible big spoiler about Bill Murray’s character in Ghostbusters 3. Many doubted what she said, but it looks like she was right on the money as Murray said the exact same thing to Mail Online.
The following contains spoilers you may not want to know before you see the movie.
In the December interview, Weaver said: “I know that my little son, Oscar – who was kidnapped from me – I think he has grown up to be a ghostbuster,” adding, “I might be in it and I see nothing wrong with being in it, although I don’t think I will have a big part in it. I think Bill Murray has a little more to do with it – he might be a ghost.”
And in the new interview, Murray says: “I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.”

Thriller
Each decade seems to bring more and more films classified under the genre of thriller, especially as people now interpret them as erotic thrillers, psychological thrillers, and disaster thrillers. So there’s no way that I could peg every single one — which is where you’ll come in, by including your faves in the comments — but here I’ve presented the ones that have captured my attention over the years.
The Birds (1963)
Though I’m not gonna be going decade-by-decade, I have to give it to Hitchcock for crafting such tension through a straightforward film whose premise, in other hands, might seem laughable: killer birds! Then things get progressively less funny: birds that can follow boats, will kill themselves to get through doors, and can swoop in at a very specific spot on your head? Shit. I went camping in Bodega Bay five years ago and was so scared to look up. A good thriller sticks with you.
Cape Fear (1962)
Part of what makes the original so ominous is its unwillingness to articulate the characters’ fears, most notably Max Cady’s (Robert Mitchum) threat to rape Sam Bowden’s (Gregory Peck) innocent daughter. Mitchum slithers through town, smoothly evading Bowden’s police allies even as you see the murderous urge in those dead eyes. The climax, on an enclosed boat on the humid river, speaks to the film’s claustrophobia.
Cape Fear (1991)
These are two very different animals, so I have to consider them separately. Robert De Niro matches Mitchum’s oily performance and then elevates it with his obsession with justice (going so far as to tattoo key passages over his scarily-buff body). Just like doe-eyed Juliette Lewis, you’re caught in his stare and can’t move as he makes his way through the Bowdens’ lives. Scorsese’s update is prone to larger explosions and fight scenes, but it never gets campy.
The Game (1997)
You may think of geeks with duct-tape swords when you hear the phrase live-action role-playing, or LARP, but David Fincher’s mindfuck has Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) participating in a twisted version of his own life, where ordinary people are accomplices and he can’t trust anyone. When Van Orton thinks that he’s lost everything — his accounts, his lover, his family — you actually believe it.
π (1998)
Darren Aronofsky’s haunting film has it all: paranoid hero wracked by physical manifestations of his genius; the union of math and religion; a corporate conspiracy; and a shocking solution to the problem. Such a compelling, crazy portrait of human nature.
Run Lola Run (1998)
Nonlinear narratives ftw: This German breakaway hit (hee) is like Sliding Doors set to a techno soundtrack and with greater stakes. Lola (Franka Potente) must gather 100,000 marks in twenty minutes, or her boyfriend Manni will be murdered. I don’t want to say anything more about the structure, but the movie does an excellent job of exploring chance and resourcefulness.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
If it were so easy to be someone else, would you be able to resist temptation? It’s great to see the meek inherit, except when they do it with terrifying calm, like Matt Damon’s titular trickster. Scariest is how easy it becomes to fool everyone involved in the life of the man that Tom Ripley is impersonating. Plus, the sexual tension heightens the suspense and conflict.
Memento
No, this post isn’t an excuse to feature shirtless men — rather, we find that in the best thrillers the characters are willing to not only get under their nemeses’ skins, but also their own. Due to losing his short-term memory, Leonard Shelby must continually tattoo himself with the details of his wife’s death — information about the alleged killer’s whereabouts, reminders of what tools are at his disposal, and seemingly inconsequential details. That the film is also shot backwards plants you right in Leonard’s head, so that you, too, can barely comprehend the mysteries unfolding around you.
Shutter Island (2010)
Marin Scorsese’s adaptation of the best-selling 2003 novel stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as two U.S. marshals investigating the disappearance of an inmate from a Massachusetts state hospital in the ’50s. From the trailer we can see that the film will deal heavily in manipulative wardens, eerie cells, and lurid hallucinations — showing that the line between sane and committed is more blurred than the marshals realize.
Shutter Island is in theaters February 19.
