Lego Movie - Directors Confirmed

Labels: ,

Warner Bros.’ movie based on the Lego toys has found its latest brick piece: a director. Or in this case, a pair of directors.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the helmers behind Sony Animation’s hit “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” are in final negotiations to write and direct the Lego movie, which is being produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee. Jill Wilfert at Lego is exec producing.

The plot is being kept under wraps, but it will be an adventure in the Lego world mixing live action and animation.

In order to get the gig, Lord and Miller prepared a presentation that not only had to pass muster with Warners brass but also with execs from Lego, which is extremely protective with its toys and brand and had a significant hand in the process.

After winning approval from Warners, they flew up to Bricks by the Bay, the Lego convention in Fremont, to make their pitch to Lego execs. Warners and Lego weren’t sure initially if they wanted a live-action or animated movie, and Lord and Miller went with a scenario that incorporated both.

One winning component that convinced Lego and Warners that the duo was up to the task was their work on “Cloudy.” They took a 32-page book, developed a story and characters and used their unique sense of humor to turn it into a family movie that also played to adults. The 3D animated adaptation of the children’s classic book grossed more than $243 million worldwide and garnered numerous nominations last awards season.

Eve joins Michael Fassbender as Magneto and James McAvoy as Professor X in the story that focuses on Marvel's superpowered team X-Men in a younger incarnation than the previous trilogy.

In comics lore, Frost was originally a villain called the White Queen who eventually became a member of X-Men, then a teacher at Xavier’s School of Gifted Students. She has telepathic powers and as the White Queen wore scantily clad costumes.

Knight and Day - Review

Labels: ,

You are not going to believe this because I'm having a hard time as well. At first I thought perhaps the world had come to an end. But once I saw a video of Snooki pitching a fit because her favorite tanning salon was closed for remodeling, I knew civilization was safe. Yesterday, I saw Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in "Knight and Day" and loved it. But before you call 9-1-1 on me, let me explain.

Like you, I agree Tom has issues. And, his issues have been played out for all to see on TMZ and Oprah. Cameron has also taken the proverbial media beating when it comes to her love (and sex) life and I agree, they have no one to blame but themselves. But aside from their baggage, these two are able to sell this fun, energetic, and creative summer flick.

Cameron plays June, an upbeat girl next door who builds muscle cars from the 70's. Tom is Roy, a recently turned rogue secret agent resisting the loss of his humanity. They meet by chance (or is it chance?) and June's life will never be the same.

Cruise brings a lovable charm to Roy and it's refreshing to see him enjoying the role. This is not a refurbished Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible. You can feel Roy genuinely cares about June. He's keenly aware that his injection into her life may bring about June's demise at the hands of his enemies and he does everything in his power to make sure that doesn't happen.

Cameron, as June, is fresh and naive. She, too, is having the time of her life in this film. Her approach to June is believable and we enjoy watching her grow and change as she takes on Roy's world of espionage. It's truly fun watching her become infatuated with Roy and her infatuation is contagious.

I laughed at all the jokes, skipped a heart beat during the action sequences, marveled at the stunts and actually cared about these characters throughout the flick. This may not be "the" film to repair Tom's damaged reputation, but it's clearly a great start.

X-Men: First Class - Michael Fassbender Joins Cast

Labels: , ,

Michael Fassbender is officially on board to play Magneto in "X-Men: First Class."

Benjamin Walker, meanwhile, has closed his deal to portray Henry McKoy, aka Beast.

Fassbender was being courted for villain roles in Fox's relaunch of the "X-Men" franchise, being directed by Matthew Vaughn, and Columbia's relaunch of "Spider-Man." He entered talks with Fox two weeks ago.

The studio is in full-blown casting mode for the movie, which is gearing up for an August start in London, and is in the process of filling out its cast of young mutants.

Fassbender will join James McAvoy, who is playing Professor Xavier in the movie, which focuses on Marvel's superpowered team X-Men in a younger incarnation than the previous trilogy.

It is unclear at this time which incarnation of the Beast character Walker will portray in "First Class." In X-Men lore, Beast was originally an over-sized young man with gorilla reflexes with a superior intellect. Later he morphed into a blue-furred tiger-like humanoid.

Fassbender's big Hollywood break came with a key turn in "Inglourious Basterds," where he played Canadian spy Archie Hicox. The actor, repped by CAA and Troika in the U.K., stars in Neil Marshall's Roman action movie "Centurion," which opens in August.

Walker, repped by WME, appeared in "Flags of our Fathers."

Hobbit - Peter Jackson Confirmed to Direct

Labels: , , ,

Several sites are reporting Peter Jackson has agreed to direct the Hobbit movies. Glad he is back on board to direct, now lets get these movies made!

Time to break out the ale and pipe weed, because we're ready to party!

What we hoped would happen, but didn't dare to think actually would, seems to be coming true. Peter Jackson, who pulled off the impossible with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has decided to direct two installments of The Hobbit after all, Deadline New York reports.

Earlier this month, after Guillermo Del Toro quit his Hobbit directing gig, Jackson said his taking over was unlikely due to current commitments. But he did leave open a slim possibility—and we say "slim" because he sounded a bit reluctant—by saying: "If that's what I have to do to protect Warner Bros' investment, then obviously that's one angle which I'll explore."

Apparently, explore he did, because his deal is reportedly being negotiated right NOW with Warner Bros , New Line and MGM.

There are no further details as yet, other than the fact that Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are scheduled to head to London the week of July 4, after which they'll be going to Los Angeles to meet with the actors who've impressed them the most from those that have been taped by casting directors.

A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas - Neil Patrick Harris Confirmed to Return

Labels: , ,

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to sit down for a quick chat with the infinitely talented Neil Patrick Harris on the set of Columbia Pictures The Smurfs, where he was forthcoming with plenty of juicy details about his upcoming projects and career.

The most interesting - and definitive - piece of information that he gave me was that he will, in fact, re-team with Kal Penn and John Cho for A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, which is currently filming in Michigan. Even though he was mowed down by Beverly D'Angelo's madame in the 2008 sequel Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, NPH will make a glorious, unexplained return to the series.

Additionally, he talked briefly about the success of his Joss Whedon collaboration - the internet sensation Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog - and said that he'd love to go for round two with Whedon, Nathan Fillion and crew. Unfortunately, he couldn't talk more about the status of a follow-up as all of the players are busy with work (Whedon is now directing The Avengers, while Fillion has a hit TV show in Castle).

Speaking of Whedon/Harris collaborations, the pair worked on an acclaimed episode of Glee, which Harris described as a truly amazing experience. When asked about whether or not he'd return to the hit FOX series, he said that he'd love to, but "the networks like to keep their actors...on their network", (referring to his long-standing contract with CBS for How I Met Your Mother) and verified that he doesn't think that he'd have the time or authority to work on another episode. Sad, but honest...

So, just to recap: NPH will grace the screen in the third Harold and Kumar flick, he'd love to sequelize Dr. Horrible, but doesn't think that anyone has the time to get it made and he will not likely return to FOX's Glee. You heard it first, here on Hollywood.com

Reese Witherspoon on the set of 'Water For Elephants'

Reese Witherspoon has a  scare as she rides horseback, but she seems like she has things under control. What a fun job! I wonder where is Robert Pattinson? He should help her!

And in other Reese news, did you hear that she'll get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011 ? It's about time! She is definitely one star who deserves this honor.

Labels: , ,

Heat Vision reports that legendary actor John Lithgow, who won a Golden Globe last year for his role on "Dexter", is returning to the big screen again in Fox's Rise of the Apes, the Planet of the Apes prequel being directed by Rupert Wyatt. A few days ago it was rumored that Don Cheadle and Freida Pinto had both been offered roles as well, and now it's confirmed that Freida Pinto has indeed joined the cast. Pinto will play the female lead, a primatologist named Caroline, while Lithgow will play the Alzheimer's-stricken father to James Franco's scientist character, who's trying to work on a cure for his father's disease.
