Total Recall - Len Wiseman to Direct Remake

Labels: , ,

Len Wiseman is in final negotiations to direct Columbia Pictures’ Total Recall, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The film will be a new, contemporized adaptation of Total Recall, which was based on the story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Kurt Wimmer is writing the screenplay. Neal H. Moritz will produce through his Original Film banner.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “Len has an incredible love of the genre and a great gift for action. He’ll bring a contemporary feel to the film while taking care with everything we love about Philip K. Dick’s original story.”

Moritz said, “I have been trying for years to work with Len and fortunately we finally found a great project that he loves as much as we do. Len is terrifically talented and we know he is the right director to re-imagine Total Recall for a new generation of fans.”

Wiseman added, “I’ve always been fascinated with Philip K. Dick’s short story, and I’m excited at that prospect of diving even deeper into the type of world it evokes and the questions it asks. I love that the most crucial mystery our character is trying to solve is the one of his own soul.”

Toby Jaffe will oversee production on behalf of Original Film. Tolmach and Sam Dickerman are overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. Columbia Pictures secured the rights to Total Recall from Miramax. Wiseman is represented by ICM and attorney Howard Abramson.

LEN WISEMAN began his career in the art department on the blockbuster films Godzilla, Stargate, Men in Black, and Independence Day. With his natural visual flair and eye for design, he was soon behind the lens directing commercials for PlayStation, Time Warner, Oracle, Intel and Activision, which quickly lead to a career in music videos, working with such artists as Quarashi, Rufus Wainwright, Megadeath, En Vogue, Static X, Paul Oakenfold, and Brooke Allison.

Wiseman went on to write and direct Underworld, which was so well received that he went on to direct Underworld: Evolution, a film he also executive produced. He went on to produce Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. His next directing project was the blockbuster hit Live Free or Die Hard.

He most recently directed the pilot for “Hawaii Five-O” and is co-writer and producer of the upcoming Underworld 4.

LOST's Damon Lindelof to Re-Write Alien Prequel Script?

Labels: ,

Damon Lindelof has taken his first big solo screenwriting job since concluding the ABC series Lost. I’m been told that he closed a deal to do rewrite work on 20th Century Fox’s Alien prequel, which the studio hopes Ridley Scott will direct as his next assignment.

In a development as vexing as a Lost plotline, studio insiders said that while Lindelof indeed met with Scott and the studio for that rewrite job, the exchange of ideas between them sparked a take that could well turn out to be a free-standing science fiction film. The studio will decide when Lindelof turns it in. Scott Free is producing and Lindelof's CAA reps closed his deal last night.

Lindeloff is currently writing with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci Paramount’s Star Trek sequel, on which Lindelof is a producer. He also teamed with Kurtzman and Orci to write the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys and Aliens, which is shooting now with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.

That’s plenty of action, but I’m told that Lindelof jumped at this opportunity because Scott's 1979 space thriller Alien was such a seminal influence on him. Resuscitating the Alien franchise has been a big priority for Fox, which has a script by Jon Spaihts, who wrote the Gabriele Muccino-directed Keanu Reeves-starrer Passengers for Morgan Creek, and whose drafts on the Alien film persuaded Scott to move from producing the film to directing it.

X-Men: First Class - Edi Gathegi Joins Cast as Darwin

Labels: , ,

The cast of Fox's X-Men: First Class prequel continues to grow. Deadline reports that actor Edi Gathegi, most recently seen as a vampire in the first two Twilight movies as well as in My Bloody Valentine, will play the mutant named Darwin in Matthew Vaughn's new X-Men movie. Darwin, one of the "Missing X-Men," has the powers of self-protection and "continuous circumstantial evolution," which allows him to adapt to any situation like growing gills if put underwater, or gaining night vision if too dark. Gathegi also appeared in that rogue independent Atlas Shrugged adaptation, but this is probably one of his biggest roles to date.

Batman 3 - The Riddler as Villain

Labels:

Thanks to Garry Lloyd for the heads up.

We're not officially kicking off Comic-Con until tomorrow, but today we have a huge bit of news regarding a comic book flick that likely doesn't even have a presence at this year's convention. We've gotten word from a reliable inside source with a studio casting grid that The Riddler is listed as a character for Chris Nolan's highly anticipated to the sequel to The Dark Knight, which is still called Batman 3 at Warner Bros. Even more interesting, the actor currently listed in the same grid to play the assumed villain is none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose status is just listed as "interested." Let's all say it together now: Hell. Yes!

We'd like to point out that this news should be considered confirmation that The Riddler is the villain in Batman 3 and less confirmation of the recent suggestions/rumors regarding Gordon-Levitt's casting as the enigmatic villain. A casting grid is used in the industry to keep production companies, agencies, etc. in the loop on a project's progress and the roles available for actors to potentially take. These documents are used for business planning in the industry and by no means would use internet speculation to list a character that may not even appear in the film. But when it comes to listing actors, this is info that can change at anytime, and just because an actor or studio is interested in one or the other, does not mean it will actually happen.

We're also cautious because the age range listed for the character is 35 to 45, and with Gordon-Levitt being 29 years old falls a little short of the mark. Of course, this wouldn't really be a reason for him to be excluded as characters can be modified in the script to accommodate a favored actor. On the lighter side though, the actor is fresh off working with Nolan on the brilliant Inception, so they've surely developed quite a working relationship as Gordon-Levitt called him "the genuine article… a real artist" and "a unique voice." For now we'll consider Gordon-Levitt's involvement a rumor, but seeing The Riddler in a studio casting grid is solid confirmation of Nolan's villain for Batman 3. Hopefully we'll get an official confirmation sooner than later.

“Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides captures fun, adventure and humor that ignited the original hit franchise – this time in Disney Digital 3D. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth, and demise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) he’s not sure if it’s love – or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.”

Haunted Mansion - Del Toro Announcement at Comic Con

Labels: ,

Guillermo del Toro surprised 6,500 fans gathered today at the San Diego Comic-Con with the announcement that he is developing a new film for Disney based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion.

This is not, of course, the first attempt to make a Pirates Of The Caribbean-style success out of the attraction. Eddie Murphy starred in a big screen Haunted Mansion movie in 2003, which was directed by Rob (Stuart Little) Minkoff, though strangely Disney made no mention of that in the announcement. Probably because it was RUBBISH.

“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy,” reckons del Toro. “After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters – think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains – for me – the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!”

Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the macabre grounds of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in Disneyland’s New Orleans square, it’s the dwelling place of 999 happy haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the mansion’s facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about horrifying encounters with the supernatural. Versions of the attraction have been built at other Disney theme parks in Orlando, Tokyo and Paris.

Movie Review - Salt

Labels: ,

"Do you think people are who they say they are?" It's a simple question that is asked in nearly every movie, and most times the answers are real simple, but in Salt, the latest Angelina Jolie blockbuster, it's supposed to be a bit more complicated. People change sides like a steroid loving Sean Connery in Entrapment, leaving the audience wondering who is Evelyn Salt? Sure, you may be thinking it all sounds terribly cliched, and you are right, there is more cliched themes in this movie than you can count, but there is enough to like in the movie to justify the popcorn.

Evelyn Salt (Jolie) starts off being tortured by the Koreans, as we learn, despite her denial that she is CIA. Once the incredibly dramatic scene progresses, we learn that she is the best there is in the CIA, until a Russian spy (apparently, they still have those) wanting to defect comes in and names her as a spy who is going to kill the Russian president to start a world war. Are you with me so far? Good. Because what follows is some crazy action, and some serious side shifting by just about everyone involved until you are not sure who to cheer for, so you just cheer for Jolie because she's hot.

Alright, so the down side to this movie is that it is yet another mindless action movie that will leave your head as soon as you get out of the theater. Sadly, it's a bit of a trend this year, but the movie is so cliched, you will be left chuckling at the absurdity and saying it was the one-armed man, and if you are one of those people that say "there is no way she could do that in real life," then you are going to hate this movie.

Never let it be said that I just spout off negative stuff about every movie. There was plenty of good things in this movie. For one, the performance of Angelina Jolie was spot on. She was hot, lethal, and very believable in her action-heavy role. Her costars in Liev Schrieber and Chiwetel Ejiofor also were equally good, and very dramatic in their respective roles as the agents chasing down Salt. When you get down to it, Salt focused on the action, and it shows.

If you've seen the trailer for the movie, and have some movie savvy to you, then you will have probably figured out the entire movie, which is a shame, because at an hour and 26 minutes, there are plenty of worse ways to spend your summers, just don't plan on contemplating it afterwards, like you did with Inception, because afterwards, you'll simply be asking yourself "what's next?"

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides - Scene Rumour

Labels: , ,

Thanks to DarthLocke for the heads up.

Last week Sean Daily a CEO at Disney showed employes a brief glimpse of POTC4. (SPOILER WARNING)

In a scene with Jack, Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Penelope Cruz, along with one of Blackbeard's crew, Jack and the others are on a tropical island and there's a point (which is on the other side of the island) that they can see. Jack wants to take the long way around, since the direct route involves jumping off a high cliff. Blackbeard wants a more direct route. Humor ensues as Blackbeard tries to force Jack to jump.

Rumor has it we may see this at Comic Con.
