Mission Impossible 4 - LOST's Josh Holloway Joins the Cast!

Labels: , ,

It was only a matter of time before Lost veteran television actor Josh Holloway scored a big movie deal and no surprise that deal is associated with Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams.

Holloway has signed on to Paramount's Mission Impossible 4 as a member of Tom Cruise's Impossible Mission Force. Any details regarding his character are being kept in a safe programmed to self destruct if meddled with.

Mission Impossible 4 was originally conceived by J.J. Abrams who then worked with writers Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum to turn it into a screenplay. Brad Bird of Pixar's The Incredibles and The Iron Giant fame is directing with newcomers Holloway, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Vladimir Mashkov joining franchise regulars Cruise, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg.

Shooting is expected to begin within the next few weeks in Dubai with an expected 400 cast and crew to spend several weeks in the city home to the tallest building on earth. The production will then move to Prague and Vancouver.

Mission Impossible 4 explodes into theaters on December 16, 2011.

All 6 Star Wars Movies to be Re-Released in 3D Starting in 2012!

Labels: , ,

Looks like Lucas is finally ready to squeeze more money out of us. All 6 movies will be converted to 3D and released one every year starting with The Phantom Menace in 2012. I wonder if by 2018 we will get Episodes 7-9 Trilogy.

What do you all think? Do you want to fork out the money to see Star Wars again?

Big news on the 3D front.

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set to re-release the entire "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Though the 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas was purportedly waiting until there were enough 3D screens available to make the release a sizable enough event.

Fox, which released all six of the original "Star Wars" films, would also release the 3D versions.

Part 1, "The Phantom Menace," would be first out of star-dock in the early months of 2012. After that, each of the films would be released in order at the same time each consecutive year, depending on how well the first re-release does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas personally overseeing the process to make sure each one is as perfected as possible. Lucas has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" was ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Also pushing the timetable is a potential breakthrough in 3D television technology. With Samsung penetrating the market with 50,000-plus 3D-equipped televisions, and Sony planning to send its version to market in the coming months, the home-viewing experience could be primed for 3D DVD versions of the classic films by the time the new 3D series runs its course.

Lucas is purportedly queuing up the theatrical re-releases as a lead-in to the ultimate home viewing experience. Beyond that, the property would launch to all other 3D media.

Underworld 4 - Kate Beckinsale Returns to Play Selene

Labels: , ,

Back February we heard Len Wiseman would be directing the next sequel in the Underworld franchise which would head into the third dimension as well as outer space for film's story. At the time the return of franchise star Kate Beckinsale seemed unlikely and the actress was interested in passing the franchise down to one of her real-life daughters. A press release today cleared things up by announcing Beckinsale would indeed reprise her role as the Lycan hunter Selene. However, there is no mention of 3D and Wiseman is only producing the project with a director currently being sought to helm the project in March of 2011.

Pinocchio live-action film announced

Labels: , ,

Warner Bros. is looking to bring "Pinocchio" to life in a live-action feature through producer Dan Jinks with Bryan Fuller tapped to script.
Nick Nantell, vice president of development at the Dan Jinks Co., will be involved in a producing capacity in "Pinocchio."

Jinks told Daily Variety that he was inspired by Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" to begin work on a new version of "Pinocchio." "I think we've found a fresh approach that's going to be very entertaining," he added.

"Pinocchio is one of the most emotional fairy tales. I'm over the moon at the opportunity to play with all the characters in this toy box with a large-scale re-telling," Fuller said. "It's exactly why I love writing."

The tale of a woodcarver who dreams of becoming a real boy first appeared in 1883 in Carlo Collodi's "The Adventures of Pinocchio." Walt Disney produced the first feature version of the story with his 1940 feature toon. Francis Ford Coppola tried producing "Pinocchio" in the early 1990s at Warner Bros., but the project stalled and led to his suit against the studio when he couldn't set it up at Columbia; a jury awarded Coppola $80 million in damages, but that figure was cut to $20 million when a trial judge tossed out the punitive damages.

The most recent "Pinocchio" adaptation came in 2002 with Roberto Benigni starring and directing.

"Pinocchio" is the first film project for Jinks at his eponymous banner, set up earlier this year. He and Bruce Cohen amicably dissolved their Jinks/Cohen producing partnership in February after producing a half a dozen features including "American Beauty," "Milk" and "Big Fish"; the producers are still working together on TV projects through a Warner Bros.-based deal.

Jinks and Cohen worked with Fuller on ABC's quirky dramedy "Pushing Daisies," which Fuller created. Scribe has a strong following in the fantasy/sci-fi world thanks to "Daisies" and his past TV endeavors including "Dead Like Me" and "Wonderfalls."

Sarah Schechter is overseeing "Pinocchio" for Warner Bros.

Star Trek 2 - Cover of SFX and Details About Klingons, Khan and More!

Labels: , ,

We all want to know what is up with the Star Trek sequel, which is currently being written. The new special 200th issue of the UK’s SFX Magazine has an extensive section all about Star Trek that includes interviews with JJ Abrams, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman. They talk sequel possibilities, Khan, Klingons, humor and more. See excerpts below.

JJ Abrams on the sequel possibilities

The extensive feature on the Star Trek sequel in the October SFX Magazine includes a brief interview with producer (and possible director) JJ Abrams, who didn’t really want to got into any details noting he wanted to (as is his custom) "keep some of the mystery going", but he did comment on the possibilities available to the team, saying:

Abrams: The universe that Roddenberry created was so vast. And so it’s hard to say there’s one particular thing that stands out as what the sequel must be. Which is on the one hand, a great opportunity. On the other hand it’s the greatest challenge – where do you go? What do you focus on? But I’m incredibly excited about the prospects.

Kurtzman and Orci on Khan and Klingons

Also in the issue is an interview with Star Trek sequel co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman who discuss various elements of their first and second Star Trek feature. Some of the most interesting parts regard who will be the ‘big bad’ for the next movie. Alex Kurtzman noted that regardless of how it turns out, the choice will be organic, saying:

Kurtzman: Starting at a premise of what you want to see and then working a story around it is not how we do it. You have to start with what is the right story. And that if you can say "That’s a story that Khan fits into", that’s how you get to that. Not deciding on a menu list of items and then seeing if you can’t string them all together.

Roberto Orci agreed noting that the decision on villains is made based on what the "characters need". Orci also pointed out that any villain will "reflect" the "new universe" they set up in the first movie. Orci also specifically discussed the Klingons, saying:

Orci: Introducing a new villain in the sequel is tempting because we now have this incredible new sandbox to play in. On the other hand, some fans really want to see Klingons and it’s hard not to listen to that. The trick is not to do something that’s been seen before just because you think it will be a short cut to likeability.

Kurtzman & Orci on tone & humor of the sequel

There has been some concern that comments comparing their 2nd Star Trek film to The Dark Knight, the 2nd new Batman film, meant Trek would be going dark. However Star Trek sequel co-writer Alex Kurtzman made it clear the tone would be similar to the first film noting:

Kurtzman: The first one had dark elements, but was ultimately very warm. We’d hope to strike a similar balance [in the sequel]

Kurtzman’s co-writing partner Roberto Orci also confirmed that Simon Pegg (who was introduced late into Star Trek 2009) would have a larger role in the sequel. Orci also commented on the importance of humor in Trek, stating:

Orci: Humor is part of the franchise and I think it’s critical, certainly to the Bones-Spock relationship. It’s definitely a big part of the Bones-Kirk relationship. So, I don’t see any world where humor doesn’t play a part.
