Movie Review - MegaMind

Labels: ,

Despite my jovial manner, I'm not a kid, nor did I attend the screening of MegaMind with one. While you would've thought I would be out of place and looking a little creepy, the movie surprisingly made me feel right at home, making me realize I was seeing an adult movie cleverly disguised, much like one of MegaMinds disguises, as a child's movie.

The movie takes many very familiar elements from movies like Superman and adds in a lot of pop culture elements, the voices of Will Farrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and David Cross and creates a fun story, albeit a slightly complicated one for the younger audience.

The idea is that Farrell's MegaMind and Pitt's MetroMan are sent to earth from a dieing world into separate places. Megamind lands in a jail and takes the part of villain to MetroMan's hero. Once MetroMan is gone, in a slightly disturbing death scene, Megamind realizes he no longer has a challenge, so he creates a new hero, from a lonely camera guy, played by Jonah Hill, only to realize his creation is a terrible villain. Now, the once great super villain must put on the cape and be a hero, with the help of a journalist and love interest, voiced by Tina Fey.

I saw the movie in 3-D and was blown away by how good it looked. Sure, there were some gimmicky shots like spiders and popcorn being dangled in front of the audience, but the movie did a really good job of keeping the effects subtle and beautiful. The little things like the hair on MetroMan's head, or the water surrounding MetroCity, or the building landscapes all looked crisp and clear and stood out with the 3-D glasses.

The soundtrack was the best part, however, with an extremely lively selection of songs by the likes of AC/DC and Michael Jackson to name a few. The songs really added to the story, and every time MegaMind made a flashy entrance, the music only added to the enjoyment.

The characters were extremely cliched, but it was part of the slightly different take on the genre the movie used. In the movie, we weren't cheering for the perfect, Superman-esque hero, or the lonley, pathetic dork-turned Superman, we were cheering for the evil super-genuise who only wanted to win one battle, and be the one to get the girl. The eventual role reversals were really interesting and quite different as we see the villain reluctantly be forced into the role of hero.

While I truly enjoyed the movie, I was left wondering if some of the more complex plot points were wasted on my tiny friends watching the movie with me. While I couldn't seem to tell if they got it, I can say the audience was completely silent for the entire hour and a half of the movie, which probably says something right there. Megamind is a very entertaining movie for the whole family, and one you shouldn't feel uncomfortable going to, no matter your age.

The Lorax - Danny DeVito to Speak for the Trees

Labels: , ,

USA Today is reporting that Danny DeVito will be the voice of the Lorax in the new 3D animated movie called The Lorax based on the Dr. Seuss book.

The Lorax is the character that defends the trees from Once-ler a businessman who uses the trees to make everything.

Thanks to our friends at FirstShowing for the description of the characters and book:

The Lorax is a remorseful and saddened narrator speaks of the industrial, entrepreneurial endeavors of the Once-ler, who uses the tufts of the Truffula Trees to make the versatile product Thneeds (a thing everyone needs). But in his efforts to mass-market his best-selling product, the businessman begins to destroy the world around him, exhausting all the natural resources and polluting the environment. Suddenly, The Lorax speaks for the trees in an attempt to make him stop production and the destruction of the land and its animals. The Hangover 2 - Liam Nesson Replaces Mel Gibson

Labels: , ,

Liam Neeson has stepped in to replace Mel Gibson in Warner Bros.' "The Hangover Part II," following a revolt by the cast and crew against Gibson's involvement in the movie.

Neeson says he was invited to take the cameo role via his "A-Team" co-star Bradley Cooper, who stars in "The Hangover Part II" along with Zack Galifianakis.

"I just got a call to do a one day shoot on 'Hangover 2' as a tattooist in Thailand, and that's all I know about it," Neeson told Daily Variety. "I just laughed my leg off when I saw 'The Hangover, I was shooting in Berlin earlier this year and rented it on the hotel TV."

Neeson flew out to the set Thursday from his home in New York.

In a statement released Thursday, director Todd Phillips said, "I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."

The studio has scheduled "The Hangover 2" for release on May 26.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Suffers Heart Attack on Set of His New Movie

Labels: ,

Just one day after his fiftieth birthday reports are surfacing that Belgian action hero Jean Claude Van Damme has had a heart attack on the set of his latest film, Weapon.

The film moved from its Romanian production base last week to do three days of shooting in New Orleans, where production was stalled due to unexplained 'complications'. And word has now gotten out that those complications involved Van Damme having what appears to be a minor heart attack before shooting any of his scenes. He was admitted to hospital in New Orleans briefly before being released and returning to Belgium. His wife and mother of two of his children, Gladys Portugues, joined him in New Orleans following the event and it now appears that he will make a full recovery.

The Hangover 2 - Mel Gibson to Make Cameo Comeback

Labels: , ,

Mel Gibson is taking a stab at saving his movie career with a comedy role as a tattoo artist in "The Hangover 2."

The troubled star, who was dropped by the William Morris Endeavor agency in July and has also faced allegations that he assaulted and made threats against his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, has signed to play a Bangkok tattooist in the highly anticipated comedy.

A source told Page Six, "It's a done deal. Mel will make a cameo as a tattoo artist. Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot, where a Bangkok set has been built, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks. Then the production moves to Thailand at the end of October."

Infinitely Polar Bear - JJ Abrams Confirmed as Producer

Labels: ,

Recalling the happenings on ABC's "Lost" from creator J.J. Abrams, it's not entirely surprising that a film titled Infinitely Polar Bear has fallen in his lap. However, it's a bit surprising that the story of this new producing gig for Abrams doesn't have some mystery behind it. Instead, Pajiba reports the film is a drama about a bipolar man who attempts to hold onto his stability in order to take care of his two daughters while their mother does her best to start a career.

Batman 3 - Inception's Tom Hardy Cast For Major Role, Perhaps Villain?

Labels: , ,

Though we'd heard over the summer that Joseph Gordon-Levitt had been listed on a studio casting grid for the role of The Riddler in the next Batman film from Christopher Nolan (which he's finally confirmed to be directing), it seems another Inception star might step into the role. Deadline reports Nolan has set Tom Hardy (Bronson) for a lead role in the next installment of the Batman franchise at Warner Bros. However, as with everything surrounding Nolan's projects, Hardy's role is being kept secret and sources won't even confirm whether or not it's a villain role.

Composer Michael Giacchino Confirmed for Cars 2, Super 8, MI4 and More!

Labels: , , , , , ,

LOST and Oscar winning composer and one of my favorites, Michael Giacchino has just landed a deal to compose Cars 2, Super 8 and Mission Impossible 4.

I am super geeked for Giacchino and can't wait to hear his work in all 3 movies!

Our friends at SlashFilm are also confirming that Giacchino's sounds will also be heard in John Carter of Mars, Monte Carlo, I'm With Cancer and the new Star Tours attraction at Disneyland.

Men in Black 3 - Baldwin, Copley and Arterton All Join the Cast

Labels: , ,

Some people don't seem to be all that thrilled about the prospect of Men in Black 3D, but the impressive cast should give them a run for their money. Aside from Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones reprising their roles, Jemaine Clement, Josh Brolin and Emma Thompson are all jumping on board the sequel. Now Pajiba has word that Alec Baldwin, Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) and Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia) are joining the cast as well. So far we know the story deals with Agent Jay (Smith) time traveling to the year 1969, but we're not exactly sure why. Details on new cast member's characters are below.

Arterton will be playing a secretary at MiB headquarters in 1969 while Baldwin will be playing the boss at the time. I'm wondering if Baldwin will be playing a younger version of Rip Torn's character Zed, but since Emma Thompson is playing the new head of MiB, I'm not sure his character or Torn himself will appear in the film at all. Meanwhile, Copley will be playing "a fast-talking Yoda type alien," which should be all sorts of fun. It would be really cool if one of the prawns from District 9 made a cameo at MiB headquarters, but that's probably just a flight of fancy on my part. in addition, Pajiba also points out the recording artist Nicole Sherzinger (the front-woman for the Pussycat Dolls) has been offered a role as Clement's character's girlfriend.

Spider-Man - Rhys Ifans Confirmed to Play The Lizard

Labels: , ,

Rhys Ifans will play Dr. Curt Connors, better known as The Lizard, in Marc Webb's "Spider-Man," TheWrap has learned.

There had been rumors across the blogosphere that Sony was thinking of bringing back Venom for the franchise reboot, but that character will not be featured in the movie, two individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Andrew Garfield stars as Peter Parker, while Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy, who rivals Mary Jane Watson for Spidey's affection.

Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin are producing the movie, which begins production in December.

Dylan Baker played Connors in Sam Raimi's two "Spider-Man" sequels.

"Spider-Man" will hit theaters in 3D on July 3, 2012.

No 3D for Deathly Hallows in November

Labels: ,

LOS ANGELES – The new "Harry Potter" film won't be as dimensional as it was supposed to be.

Warner Bros. Studios says the seventh installment in the popular boy-wizard franchise will be released only in standard 2-D, not 3-D as planned.

The studio said in a statement Friday that it was unable to complete the 3-D conversion of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" in time for its scheduled Nov. 19 release date, and it didn't want to keep fans waiting.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" will be released in both 2-D and 3-D on July 15, 2011.

Movie Review - Red

Labels: ,

As you go through movie blog after movie blog you will see or hear about the summer movie season that was. Some will bring up the one or two blockbusters like Inception that did well, but for the most part, they will tell you it was pretty terrible. Well, I'm here to say the discussion isn't done yet, because Red came to the party, just a bit late. So, does that mean it was bad? Not hardly.

Red is a movie starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban and Mary-Louise Parker in a movie that is half Space Cowboys and half A-Team and all fun. The movie is about retired CIA operative and super-spy Frank Moses (Willis) as a guy flirting with an ordinary life, and an ordinary girl (Parker), when out of nowhere, his ex-company, the CIA decides he knows too much and tries to kill him. The kill-sqaud is lead by Karl Urban, who will stop at nothing to kill Moses, and his old team, consisting of a mental patient (Malkovich), a female James Bond (Mirren) and Morgan Freeman. Now, they must clear their name before they get dead.

The casting in this movie is right on. Sure, Willis is his normal self, but every character is so colorful, and look like they are having so much fun, it is impossible not to join in. The action is silly and over the top, but really well done, and the comedy is pretty even, just look for Malkovich; when he's on screen, it's a guaranteed laugh. Urban does a good job as a tough guy, and even Ernest Borgnine and Brian Cox add to the fun. Finally, Parker is quite adorable as the innocent girl looking for adventure, and finding it in a bunch of geriatric CIA operatives.

The movie may have been a bit long, and slowed down a bit about three quarters of the way through, but overall, it was a great time and deserves to be compared to nearly any summer movie you saw this season, and often will win the comparison. It has a great cast, and the fun is infectious. Sure, there are smarter movies like Catfish or Social Network that deserve to be praised for their greatness, but every once in awhile, you've gotta have a little fun, too, and Red will deliver that last bit of summer fun.

Mike Myers to Voice Pepe Le Pew in New CGI Live Action Movie

Labels: , ,

Mike Myers used to joke that donning the 80 pounds of faux-latex blubber to play Fat Bastard in Austin Powers caused him to sweat so much that "by the end of the day, I was Pepé Le Pew." Vulture has learned that Warner Bros. Pictures is now developing a live-action/CGI movie on the lovelorn French skunk and Myers is attached to voice the lead role.

The decision to reinvigorate the Looney Tunes cast of characters — which includes fading American icons like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig — is a high priority for Warner Bros., for while they still throw off a billion dollars in licensing revenue annually, that’s barely a fifth of what Disney makes every year from licensing better-known characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Mission Impossible 4 - Anil Kapoor and Lea Seydoux Cast as Main Villains

Labels: , ,

With filming for the next installment of the Mission Impossible franchise already underway, we now have word of a couple more additions to the cast making sure there's plenty of dastardly plans to be thwarted by Ethan Hunt and the rest of the Impossible Mission Force. We've already heard Michael Nyqvist will play one of the lead villains in the sequel and now two more names have cropped up. THR reports that the very lovely Lea Seydoux (Robin Hood, Inglourious Basterds) will play the lead female villain, while Deadline reports the charismatic Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire) has also taken some sort of antagonistic role as well.

The move was expected since the Internet was abuzz with her on the list of female finalists, then about to get an offer, then having an actual offer.

But despite the speculation that the red-headed star of "Easy A" and "Zombieland" would be playing red-headed Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson, she is playing the blonde-haired tragic love interest Gwen Stacy.
